What’s Pilates?

In Pilates’ Return to Life Through Contrology written by Joseph H. Pilates, he states that Contrology (what we now call Pilates) restores physical fitness.

“Physical fitness is the first requisite of happiness. Our interpretation of physical fitness is the attainment and maintanance of a uniformly developed body with a sound mind fully capable of naturally, easily, and satisfactorily performing our many and varied tasks with spontaneous zest and pleasure.”

“Contrology is complete coordination of body, mind, and spirit.”

“Contrology develops the body uniformily, corrects wrong postures, restores physical vitality, invigorates the mind, and elevates the spirit.”

“Contrology is designed to give you suppleness, natural grace, and skill that will be unmistakably reflected in the way you walk, in the way you play, and in the way you work.”

Joe invented many pieces of equipment like the Universal Reformer, the Trapeze Table aka the Cadillac, the Wunda Chair, the Ladder Barrel, the Spine Corrector, and other inventions like the Magic Circle. He had devoted teachers and students that carried on his work after his passing in 1967 and his wife Clara’s passing in 1977.
